C. Goal Seek – Marks Required for 80%
Step 1: Prepare the marksheet
Enter the following in LibreOffice Calc.
Student Name | English | Maths | Science | Social Science | Computer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Amit | 70 | 65 | 72 | 68 | 75 |
Riya | 80 | 70 | 78 | 75 | 82 |
Rahul | 60 | 55 | 65 | 62 | 70 |
Sneha | 85 | 80 | 88 | 82 | 90 |
Neha | 72 | 68 | 70 | 74 | 76 |
Assume the five subject marks are in columns B:F.
In G2, enter:
=SUM(B2:F2)
In H2, enter:
=G2/500*100
Copy the formulas down to row 6.
Step 2: Apply Goal Seek
Find the marks required in Maths for Amit to obtain 80%.
Select cell
H2.Choose Tools → Goal Seek.
Enter:
Formula cell:
$H$2Target value:
80Variable cell:
$C$2
Click OK.
Calculation:
Total marks needed = 80% of 500 = 400.
Marks in the other four subjects = 70 + 72 + 68 + 75 = 285.
Required Maths marks = 400 − 285 = 115 marks.
Important: Amit would need 115 marks in Maths, which is impossible if the maximum is 100. Goal Seek may still calculate this mathematical result, but the student cannot achieve 80% with the other marks unchanged.
If the practical requires a feasible result, use a different student's marks or lower the target percentage. For example, with Amit's other marks unchanged, a 75% target requires 90 marks in Maths.
Result: Goal Seek demonstrates how to find the required marks and reveals whether the target is achievable.
